Yup. We did a thing.
We're not ready. Not by a long shot. But we sat down with the McMurray Hatchery catalog, and we picked out some birds to add to our little farm.
They arrive in two weeks.
We're excited about the prospect of farm fresh eggs to eat and share with friends, to have some animal comedic relief (because 2020, amiright?) and most importantly, to be more self sufficient on our little farm. We've been planning for our big garden projects for later in the spring, and chickens are a great compliment to that.
We've felt pretty strongly since kiddo was little that we wanted him to be deeply aware of where his food comes from (not the grocery store, y'all) - and having animals that provide nourishment for us is an important part of that. We also firmly believe that happy, well cared for animals are in fact, more nutritious and delicious.
To get ready for this little adventure, we fixed up a little shed to serve as an easily accessible first home for our chicks. Geoff and his little helper did most of the work, got it wired up to add some heat lamps, and have been sourcing all the bits and bobs that we need to raise our own birds. We had an existing full coop set up from previous inhabitants - but because the temperatures are still pretty low at night, we wanted somewhere a little bit easier to keep to temperature for our little flock. They'll move to the coop when the temperatures are a little friendlier and once they have adult feathers.
